HUNDREDS have gathered at Point Nepean on the Mornington Peninsula for a re-enactment of the first shot fired by the British allied forces during World War I.
Bendigo Advertiser photographer Brendan McCarthy is there, and captured the moment.
Brendan also captured pictures of Member for Northern Victoria and Minister for Sport and Veterans Affairs Damian Drum speaking with gunner Neville Cornelius.
England declared war on Germany late on August 4, 1914 but because of time differences, it was not announced in Australia until 12.30pm on August 5.
At 12.45 pm, the declaration of war was flashed to Point Nepean and a shot was fired.
