Grenfell has scored 254.30 across the opening two days of competition.
The reigning Australian Queen's Prize champion is level with Jersey's Dan Richardson.
Jersey's Barry Le Cheminant has scored 254.32 to be the leader in Glasgow.
Tuesday's shooting for Grenfell and his rivals wil be 900 yards and 1000 yards.
Competing at his third Commonwealth Games, Grenfell teamed with James Corbett from Benalla to be fourth in the full-bore pairs event.
A gold medallist in the pairs at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, Grenfell is a previous winner of the Bendigo Advertiser-Prime 7 Sports Star of the Year award.
He was inducted to the Sports Star Hall of Fame last February.
