MARYBOROUGH is now two wins clear of sixth-placed Strathfieldsaye on the A-grade netball ladder after winning Saturday’s Bendigo Football Netball League match on Storm’s court.
In the clash between fifth and sixth, Storm made a fine start to lead by three goals at quarter-time.
There was no panic in the Maryborough camp as it lifted its play in the second.
The Magpies were able to achieve a six-goal turnaround in the second quarter.
By half-time it was the Borough which led by three goals.
Maryborough coach Alisha Chadwick said the third quarter was one of the team’s best of the season.
“It was a great third quarter by all of the team,” Chadwick said.
“Pressure was the key. We started to force some turnovers in mid-court or in our forward half and scored goals from them.”
The Magpies soared to a 62-38 victory in what was another crucial test.
Chadwick said selecting best players was not an easy task.
“We had every player contribute in this win.
“This was one of our best team performances of the season, especially away from home.”
Stars for Maryborough included goalshooter Jordan MacIlwain and centre Alicia Cassidy.
When these clubs met in round five, Maryborough weathered Storm’s pressure to win a great contest, 39-36.
The Magpies are back on their court at Barkers Oval in Princes Park for next Saturday’s match against Golden Square.
Based on ladder positions and the run home it may well be an elimination final preview for the A-grade competition.
In Saturday’s other A-grade matches, Kangaroo Flat thrashed Sandhurst by 45 goals.
The Sandhurst line-up battled to stop a red-hot Roos’ attack and mid-court.
By the final whistle, Kangaroo Flat led 67-22 at Beck Legal Oval in Dower Park.
The Janelle Hobbs-coached Kangaroos have achieved a win-loss record of 12-1, and drew with Kyneton.
Flat will start hot favourite to chalk up win 13 when it plays South Bendigo this Saturday.
Kyneton took another crucial step toward stitching up the double chance as it won a closely-fought contest with Golden Square by eight goals.
It was third against fourth in this game on Kyneton’s court.
The yellow and black went on to win 44-36.
Kyneton has won both clashes with Golden Square this season.
The Tigers are back on their court at Kyneton Showgrounds for next Saturday’s match against Strathfieldsaye Storm.
Second-placed Gisborne scored a 16-goal win against South Bendigo.
The red, white and blue teamed superbly on the QEO court to win 49-33.
The Bloods worked hard to be much closer than it was in round five when Gisborne triumphed on its court by 28 goals.
Gisborne is at home for this Saturday’s match against Eaglehawk at Gardiner Reserve.
In Saturday’s A-reserve matches, Sandhurst jumped above Kangaroo Flat after its win at Dower Park.
The maroon and blue won 48-19.
Closest match in the competition was at the QEO where South Bendigo beat Gisborne by 14 goals.
Strathfieldsaye was too strong for Maryborough at Flight Centre Park in Tannery Lane.
The ladder-leading Golden Square won by 54 goals at Kyneton.
Details from Sunday's matches between Castlemaine and Eaglehawk at Camp Reserve were not available.
The A-grade teams from the Magpies and Hawks had identical records of 1-12 going into the round 14 match on Castlemaine’s court.
