For so long the hunted in the Heathcote District Football League, on Saturday the Cats will go into their game against North Bendigo at home carrying the rare tag as the underdogs.
While the Cats are still positioned well in second spot for a tilt at their fourth premiership in a row, top side North Bendigo is capturing all the HDFL attention on the back of 11 wins in a row.
“North Bendigo is definitely the form team of the competition,” Cats coach Adrian Dohnt said on Friday.
“They’ve got a good even spread of blokes playing good footy and kicking goals, so we’ll have to be right on our game because they’re definitely the side to catch at the moment.
“When we played North last time they gave us a bit of a touch-up on their ground, so the mindset for us to get out and hunt them is something the boys are all really looking forward to.”
When the sides last met in round seven, the Bulldogs ended the Cats’ 20-game winning streak with a 16-point victory.
The Cats (11-2) have provided their supporters with plenty of value for money over the past five weeks.
Of the Cats’ past five games, they’ve won three of them by six points or less.
“We’ve had some tough games against those sides at the top and it’s been good to get those tight wins... we don’t care what we win by, just as long as we get the four points,” said Dohnt, who is still out with a fractured leg.
“It’s a trait of the past few years that the boys just don’t like losing games of footy.
“In the games we’ve lost over the past few years, they haven’t tended to be by big margins because the boys just fight it right out until the end.
“If you can keep getting yourself over the line in those tight games, you know it’s a good sign.”
If the Cats win on Saturday, they will keep the race for top spot alive.
But if the Bulldogs extend their winning run to 12, they will sew up the minor premiership.
