Our forefathers, in making decisions, had a reference point to draw on from which emerged high ethical standards and moral values, which in turn were the building blocks in moulding this great nation of ours.
The reference point of course was the Bible.
The Bible message has never changed, but as succeeding generations have become more distant from their Christian roots we have witnessed, slowly but surely, a moving of the reference point to today.
Modern secular society has lost touch with its Judeo- Christian heritage from which is derived not only our laws and institutions but a secure basis for a consistent set of ethics and morals.
Yes, there are parents who without any conscious Christian affiliation instill Christian morality and ethics in their children, but for each of those parents, there is one who, by their words and actions, belittles the Christian virtues listed in Brian's letter and bequeaths to their offspring antisocial values.
Regretfully, human frailty has left the "Church" with much to answer for, but to dismiss the message because of the frailty of the messenger is to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Our fragmenting secular society desperately needs some glue to hold it together, and as a nation we withdraw RE from schools at our peril.
