The alternative hashtag to #HappyBirthdayPrinceGeorge began trending on Tuesday morning after Kensington Palace released two photos of George, Prince William and Catherine gazing longingly at exotic insects at the National History Museum’s Sensational Butterflies exhibition.
The photos, captured by royal photographer John Stillwell, show George enamoured with a giant butterfly, much like he was with the bilbies at Taronga Zoo back in April.
For the photos Kate wore a green silk tea dress by British designer Suzannah, the same dress she wore when she launched the Tour de France on July 5. While the $860 dress is still available to buy online, the same can’t be said for George’s $50 denim overalls by Petit Bateau, which sold out shortly after the first image of the prince walking were published over the weekend.
Celebrations of George’s first birthday reportedly started last week with Kate's mum Carole Middleton hosting a Peter Rabbit-themed party at the family’s home in Bucklebury and will conclude with a party at William and Kate’s Kensington Palace apartment. His great grandmother, The Queen, is expected to attend before travelling to Glasgow to open the Commonwealth Games. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall won’t be popping in for fairy bread and cake as they are touring Scotland.
The Prince of Wales also missed William’s first birthday in 1982 as he and Diana were busy on official duties in Canada.
The couple have requested no gifts be sent to mark the third in line to the throne’s birthday and released a statement thanking people for “their warm and generous good wishes to George and our family.”
George's first birthday has been made extra special for Kate as it was confirmed she will be embarking on her first solo engagement in September.
“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Malta on 20th and 21st September 2014 to represent Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Malta's independence,” a palace spokesperson said.
