GISBORNE scored a crucial 11-goal victory on Golden Square's court in Saturday's 13th round of A-grade matches in the Bendigo Football Netball League.
Beaten by Square in the previous meeting, Gisborne won three of the four quarters in this clash at MyJet Oval in Wade Street.
After an evenly-fought opening term, Gisborne led 11-8.
The visitors dominated most of the second quarter and led 23-12 at half-time.
Both teams scored 18 goals apiece in the second half as Gisborne went on to win 41-30.
The victory kept Gisborne on track to gain top place by the end of the home-and-away series.
Gisborne coach Kerryn Jorgensen said the second quarter was one of the team's best this season.
"We didn't fall away in terms of defensive play or miss too many shots on goal," Jorgensen said.
"Golden Square is one of the toughest teams we have played all season.
"Their defensive pressure was some of the best we have faced."
Gisborne centre Tiana Newman played another outstanding game.
Newman earned the Betty Thompson Medal for being best and fairest in the BFNL competition last season.
Jorgensen praised the play of defenders Polly Salter and Melissa Harris in what was the team's 11th victory of the season.
The Gisborne coach said the fourth-placed Golden Square would not be easy to beat over the next five rounds or in finals.
“They have a strong team. They did beat us earlier in the season, and really put a lot of pressure on in every third of the court.”
At Maryborough the Magpies beat Sandhurst by a dozen goals.
Maryborough coach Alisha Chadwick said a "good start" had been the aim throughout the week's training and on game-day.
The Magpies led 16-7 at quarter-time and surged to a 15-goal lead by half-time of the contest at Barkers Oval in Princes Park.
"The start was excellent," Chadwick said.
"Some great intercepts in defence and mid-court were turned into goals.
"By half-time we had the momentum and kept working hard."
Sandhurst won the second half, 21-18, but it was the Borough who claimed the premiership points in a 47-35 victory.
The ladder-leading Kangaroo Flat dominated against Eaglehawk.
A formidable attack racked up 80 goals in what became a 57-goal win for the Roos.
It was a closely-fought match at Queen Elizabeth Oval where Kyneton scored a 55-43 victory against South Bendigo.
Back in the A-grade competition after a break of several years, Kyneton has played superbly this season.
The yellow and black has achieved 10 wins and a draw.
Strathfieldsaye won every quarter on its way to a 55-20 win against Castlemaine at Flight Centre Park.
The young Castlemaine team worked hard to be within five goals at quarter-time.
Storm gained a 15-goal lead by half-time.
The third term was to be one of Strathfieldsaye’s best this season.
Storm scored 16 goals and kept the Pies to just two.
The Strathfieldsaye Storm is at home for next Saturday's battle with Maryborough.
Storm has a 6-7 record, and Maryborough goes into the game with a win-loss tally of 7-6 in a match between the fifth and sixth-placed teams.
Other matches on Saturday will be Kyneton at home to Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat faces Sandhurst at Beck Legal Oval in Dower Park, South Bendigo and Gisborne clash on the QEO court, and Castlemaine will play Eaglehawk at Camp Reserve.
