He started working on the routes two months ago after a friend told him the tramways were looking for volunteers.
“I retired to Bendigo from Mildura about eight years ago,” he said.
“I had been looking for a volunteering opportunity to get involved in and learn about the community.
“(Working on) the trams has been a very interesting learning experience.
“They also remind me of riding the trams in Melbourne when I was a boy. Some of them might even be the same ones.”
Mr Hardie said the opportunity to work on the trams let him learn about Bendigo’s history.
“I have been listening to the tour guides and been learning some very interesting things,” he said.
“(For tourists) it is a very good way to find out about Bendigo and see what other places of interested there are in town. You see a lot on the tram.
“Along with Joss House, Central Deborah GOld Mine and the Discovery Centre there is a lot to see.”
