This morning 250 staff members gathered out the front of the Bendigo Bank building holding colourful balloons and signs of letters that spelled out "#It stops with me Bendigo".

The message was referencing the "Racism. It stops with me" campaign started by the Australian Human Rights Commission and promoted by the City of Greater Bendigo.

Tomorrow the city will host an event inviting people to sign a group pledge denouncing racism, or write one of their own pledges to take home.

A cherry picker will be on site for the event and at 11am to take a community photo.

A council spokeswoman said the city had been thrilled by the response it had received to its media campaign.

The campaign comes after heated opposition to a planned mosque in Bendigo.

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Barry Lyons was contacted by the Australian Human Rights Commission to join the campaign, which invites all Australians to reflect on what they can do to counter racism. 

Cr Lyons previously told the Bendigo Advertiser the attention Bendigo had received because of moral objections to the mosque had "probably accentuated" the need to come on board the campaign.
