27 Australians among MH17 crash dead

London: A Malaysia Airlines plane en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has been shot down in separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine, claiming the lives of 295 passengers and crew. Malaysia Airlines told Fairfax Media that 27 Australians were on board.

The tragedy represents a serious escalation of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and comes only months after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 mysteriously disappeared somewhere over the Indian Ocean.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was investigating "a number" of Australians abroad the Boeing 777.

“We have grave concerns that a number of Australians may have been on board the flight," DFAT said in a statement. "Officials are urgently working to seek confirmation with relevant authorities."

World's media respond to carbon tax repeal

Prime Minister Tony Abbott relished its repeal, Palmer United Party senators hugged at its demise and the world's media turned their attention to Australia as the carbon tax's death knell reverberated around the globe on Thursday.

The BBC felt the end of the contentious tax, described as a levy on Australia's biggest polluters, warranted second-top billing on its news website on Thursday afternoon.

The BBC report described the repeal as a win for Tony Abbott, but made mention of Australia's status as the "world's worst polluter per head of population" and included critical responses from Labor, the Greens and the Climate Institute think-tank's statement that Australia was now "bereft of credible climate policy".

Anti-mosque woman loses bid to stay anonymous

A Bendigo businesswoman behind a vehement anti-mosque Facebook page has lost a tribunal bid to stay anonymous.

In a tearful and rambling appearance at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal today, Monika Evers, a co-administrator of the Stop The Mosque in Bendigo page, claimed she had been ‘‘villified’’ online by people who supported the Bendigo mosque proposal, feared for her safety and wanted her name kept out of the media.

But VCAT deputy president Mark Dwyer said there was ‘‘insufficient evidence’’ to support her claims of being threatened and that Ms Ever’s ‘‘perception’’ of biased, pro-mosque media reporting was not grounds to have her name suppressed.
