UPDATE 1.30PM: Snow is falling at Trentham, Hepburn, Daylesford and Macedon.
EARLIER: A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for parts of the state as a strong cold front moves across the state.
Snow is also predicted to fall in Melbourne’s outer suburbs and the Macedon Ranges.
People in the south west, central and west and south Gippsland forecast districts should prepare for northwest to southwesterly winds around 50km/h with damaging peak gusts of 90 to 100km/h.
Bendigo itself is not in the affected area, but the winds are forecast for towns in the Macedon Ranges. To see which forecast district you are in, click here.
Snow could fall as low as 600 metres, possibly settling on the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Chris Godfred told The Age.
“Certainly any high point such as Mount Dandenong would be a chance and other areas such as Mount Macedon I think would certainly be a candidate too,” he said.
“It could be cold enough for snow to settle on the ground in some areas but I wouldn’t predict it would be of any significant depth.”
Snow could also fall in Ballarat, Mr Godfred said.
There is also a warning to sheep graziers in the south west, north central, northern country, Wimmera, central, west and south Gippsland, east Gippsland and north east forecast districts
The bureau is warning sheep graziers that cold temperatures, showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Thursday and Friday.
"There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions," the bureau advises.
