Mr Dorman, a volunteer with the Golden Square Fire Brigade, said there are lots of benefits from lending a hand.
"You give help and in return get (satisfaction) out of doing so," he said.
"There are lots of people who won't do anything and then go an criticise you.
"I would like to see them do something."
Mr Dorman followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father who were both the captain and secretary of the Taradale Fire Brigade respectively.
He volunteered with brigades in Taradale, Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square.
He said without volunteers the fire brigades would not be able to cope with the amount of work they receive.
"We need volunteers," he said.
"They are very important."
Mr Dorman said there were many roles volunteers would take on, including administration roles.
"I help collect donations and tidy up around the station," he said.
"There is lots to do."
The Golden Square Fire Brigade has about 50 volunteer members.
