The public health consultant was a co-founder of the Bendigo branch of the Greens in 1995 and has since served on the party's state council, women's network and global Greens conference.

Developing the region's renewable energy industry and beefing up V/Line services topped the list of priorities as the Greens battle for a balance of power outcome in the Victorian Upper House.

Despite facing an uphill battle to topple incumbent Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan, Dr Alden said she wanted to highlight  Bendigo's potential as "the solar capital of Victoria".

"The renewable energy industry is a remarkable employer currently," she said.

"The vocational training opportunities that we have could help to support Bendigo as the solar capital of Victoria."

Dr Alden said the Solar Systems project at Bridgewater showed the private sector's enthusiasm for future solar technologies.

"People who show leadership and put their money up for particular investments like that demonstration project are the type of things that will inspire other people to do similarly," she said.

"We want really good investment from government and from the private sector."

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber announced Dr Alden as the candidate for Bendigo East in front of the Williamson Street 24-Hour General Store on Wednesday.

Mr Barber said the Greens wanted to pressure the State Opposition to release policies regarding renewable energy.

"We know they're well ahead in the polls and my fear is that they will try and coast through to the line without any of us knowing what's really planned with a future Labor Government," he said.

Mr Barber said he would announce a "whole sweep" of central Victorian candidates in coming months.
