LORRAINE Castles is a true believer in giving back to the community.
The Spring Gully resident has spent the past several weeks helping with the running of the Bendigo Eisteddfod - a role she knows all too well, considering her husband, David Castles, is the competition's co-ordinator.
"I usually help out with the ticket sales and canteen," she said.
"The easy bits.
"It's a team effort though - everyone pulls their own weight."
When she is not serving sweets or selling tickets, Mrs Castles volunteers at the UnitingCare Opportunity Shop.
"I like selling things and using skills I did not use during my professional career," she said.
"I am very much into recycling, reusing and protecting the environment - so I find it's a good fit."
Mrs Castles, who is retired, said she liked to keep busy through helping people.
"I like meeting people I would otherwise not meet," she said.
"I like trying to make their lives as easier and better as possible."
Mrs Castle said she had made many acquaintances through her volunteer work.
"I have met some lovely people," she said.
