He was taken by paramedics to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He arrived at hospital in a stable condition.
The accident happened just before 4am on the Calder Freeway when the car ran off the road.
An ambulance spokesman said the State Emergency Service worked for some time to free the man after he became trapped.
He sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Meanwhile, a woman in Rochester came away unscathed from a single car crash on a bridge.
Rochester police said the woman lost control of her car and ran it off the road after hitting some fencing on the bridge.
One of the car's wheels was hanging off the bridge.
The woman was uninjured and was checked by paramedics.
