MARIO Matejcek caused an upset in Wednesday’s quarter-finals of the Bendigo Bank Winter JT and AMT tennis tournament.
Matejcek proved too good for No.1 seed Jeremy Beale in their open men’s clash, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals at the Bendigo Bank Tennis Complex.
Matejcek will meet wildcard entrant Jordan Szabo for a place in the final.
Szabo was in dominant form against Adam Haanappel in recording a commanding 6-4, 6-0 victory.
With Beale knocked out, No.7 seed Sam Thompson is the highest-ranked player left in the open men’s draw.
Thompson downed No.3 seed Adam Lasky 6-1, 7-6 to book his semi-final berth.
Thompson will clash with Jack Thiessen in their semi-final.
In the open women’s, sisters Viktorija Rajicic and Monika Rajicic remain on track for a possible final against each other.
Viktorija - seeded No.1 - breezed past Sophie Torcello 6-1, 6-2 in their quarter-final tussle.
No.3 seed Monika only conceded one game in trouncing Noelleda Ah San 6-1, 6-0.
With Zoe Hives (seeded No.2) and Alana Parnaby (No.4) also advancing from the quarter-finals, the top four seeded women have all made Thursday’s semis.
Viktorija Rajicic will take on Parnaby in their semi-final, while Hives will clash with Monika Rajicic for a final berth.
