Supporters, players, officials and families have been encouraged to attend this Saturday's Calivil United versus YCW game to mark the special occasion.

Northern United, coached by Tony Southcombe, finished on top of the BFL ladder in the 1984 season.

After bowing out in the first semi-final the previous year, players were determined to reach the grand final.

After a successful finals series, United played off against Eaglehawk in the grand final.

Both teams fought hard in the last game of the season, with scores level at half-time.

However, United kicked away in the third quarter to lead by 35 points heading into the final term before going on to win 18.16 (124) to 17.9 (111).

Best afield was United’s was Ron Best, who kicked 11 goals.

The 1984 premiership was the start of a successful era for United, which went on to win four flags in a row.

This weekend both Calivil and YCW will also be playing for the Kevin Demeo Memorial Trophy and the George Thompson Shield.

Calivil United is currently sixth on the Loddon Valley ladder, while the YCW Eagles are seventh.

Calivil players will be wearing the United strip for the heritage match.

Festivities will begin at 12.30pm on Saturday at Raywood Recreation Reserve.
