THERE were many closely-fought contests in Monday's start to the $500,000 Australian Snooker Goldfields Open at Bendigo Stadium.
Day one highlights included the 5-3 victory by Matthew Stevens against Luca Brecel.
Scores were locked on three frames apiece before Stevens racked up 63-21 and 59-52 wins to advance to round two.
The wildcard matches ended in 5-0 victories by Andrew Higginson and Dominic Dale.
Next up for Higginson is No. 1 seed and last year's runner-up, Collingwood's Neil Robertson.
