The new coach, who recently moved to the city with his wife and newborn, decided to get involved with the club.
Widdowson said he wanted to encourage players of all ages to get involved with the game he loves.
“Tennis is a game for life,” he said.
“The amount of members and the number of people who play tennis at Strathdale has declined over the past couple of years.
“There is not a lot happening out so the president of the club and myself are keen to get things up and running again.
“Hopefully we can revitalise the club and trying and get things happening.”
Widdowson was a teacher before he became a coach, teaching in the United Kingdom and in Japan.
He said he had been involved with coaching in New Zealand and in Melbourne for the past eight years.
Widdowson he was now spreading the word about his coaching to locals.
"The first lesson people take part in will be free and kids under the age of nine will get a free racket," he said.
