Detectives investigating the incident say it was reported the car owner had mistakenly left his keys in the ignition.
The 1987 Nissan Navara ute was then stolen from the driveway of a home in Dove Court, California Gully, between 9pm and 9.30pm on Tuesday night.
About 10.40pm the car was found, burnt-out, in bush land near Westwood Drive.
UPDATE, Wednesday 7.19AM: Detectives from Bendigo's criminal investigation unit are investigating the incident.

UPDATE 10.50PM: The car fire in California Gully has been put out.
EARLIER: BENDIGO and Eaglehawk brigade firefighters are attending a car fire in Westwood Drive in California Gully.
Bendigo brigade station officer Hugh Kelly said the car was "well alight" when firefighters arrived on scene.
He said firefighters were trying to gain access to the car, which was parked in bushland.
He said police had been called to the scene.
