New local owner to build upon solid foundation

FROM THE WEEKEND: Unique finds at Take 2 Market

BENDIGO'S own Square Market has become somewhat of an institution during its five-year existence.

The market is at Bendigo Town Hall every three months and is well-known for its unique handmade goods ranging from candles to clothing.

The market was sold to a new owner two months ago.

Venue manager of the Bendigo Town Hall and new owner of The Bendigo Square market, Sharon Carlson, is pleased to be taking over the well-established market.

"Belinda and Jodie (the previous owners) did such a great job of laying the foundations for this market," she said.

"This is the first market under our banner.

"We will be building on what they had already developed."

She said the market had run for five years.

She said there was not a great need for anything to change within the market.

"There are 40 sites here today," she said on Saturday.

"We are looking to possibly expand onto the grass for our summer market.

"There is opportunity for growth, for sure."

Rutherglen resident Meg Barnao of handmade bag label Bags by Meg said the market was consistently good to be involved with.

"It is more of a boutique feel," she said.

"It's less trash and treasure than other markets.

"Everyone seems to really understand the concept of handmade goods."

Ms Barnao's friend Diana Saville assisted her with the market stall.

She said there were not many markets featuring handmade goods in the region.

Melbourne resident Sarah Hardy is the principal illustrator at PopcornBlue.

Ms Hardy said her stall sold one-of-a-kind artworks.

"I have been a part of these markets for three years," she said.

"The venue is so beautiful.

"It is perfectly small and cosy so there is no pressure to look at everyone's stalls."

"This is the highest quality market I have ever been a part of."

Zen Moments Candles owner Jane Halpin said she had been involved with the market for two years.

"I had heard really great things about it, so I got involved," she said.

"It is a really quality market."

The market runs from 10am until 4pm, seasonally.
