Children from Maiden Gully Primary School were completing their own Relay for Life, with each child donning a super hero costume and donating a gold coin to the cause.
Year six student Declan Beatty said the school government - a leadership team of 15 grade six students - chose the super hero theme because, "It takes a hero to beat cancer".
The event ran all day, with each year level taking turns to run laps around the outdoor gymnasium.
Costumes ranged from the traditional, such as Spider-Man and Batman outfits, to original creations. Cassidy Sadrinna came dressed as "Sleep Girl" - a hero she created - who has the power to wake people up from the dead.
"When my grandma passed from cancer she died in her sleep," Cassidy explained of her costume choice.
"So I came as Sleep Girl, who has the power to wake people from the dead."
Declan Beatty came dressed as a scientist who was working hard to find a cure for cancer.
"A lot of people come as regular super heroes so I came as a different one," he said.
And it wasn't just the children who had superhuman powers for the day.
Teachers morphed into a Ninja Turtle, Spider-man and super villain the Riddler - to name a few.
As well as running laps, children also also wrote tributes to people they knew who had cancer, and their touching words were displayed on a special wall.
Year six teacher Laurel Weston said the student leadership team organised the theme, the publicity and arranged the parent helpers.
"It's about helping them develop their leadership skills and encouraging them to give back to the community," she said.
"It's a good opportunity for them to think about people in their lives who have survived, are fighting or have died from cancer.
"Every family or child received a card to write a message about someone affected by cancer."
Ms Weston said the children were hoping to raise more than $500 from the event.
