A new group called the Wellsford Forest Conservation Alliance aims to preserve the forest for future generations by declaring the area a national park.
A report to be presented at Wednesday's City of Greater Bendigo meeting notes Box-Ironbark woodlands have been reduced to less than 17 per cent of their original cover within the state.
Pole and post cutting businesses operate in the forest and licences have also been given for the commercial harvest of firewood.
Council staff recommended the push be supported by writing to the state government to request the matter be considered.
