Victorian Premier Denis Napthine did a wonderful thing on Friday when he announced $3 million to build the refuge in this city.
It's a fantastic step forward for Annie North and paves the way for the establishment of this much-needed facility.
It's important now that the state government and the community continues to support Annie North to ensure a facility of the highest possible standard is built.
First and foremost is creating a refuge for women and children to feel safe.
But Annie North chief executive officer Julie Oberin spoke on Friday about other facilities the refuge could deliver with the right support.
One was a soundproof room which will allow for court hearings, so some women and children can give evidence without having to face their abuser in a courtroom. Presently... amazingly... people have to travel to Melbourne for such a facility.
While this is the time to celebrate the funding, the hard work will soon begin to ensure this facility has everything needed. No doubt those at Annie North will relish this wonderful opportunity and good on them - they deserve it.
