She said she was home at the time it occurred but did not hear a loud noise or notice that anything had happened until emergency services arrived.
"Everyone in town has been talking about it," she said.
"It was crazy.
"There aren't many lamp posts on that road and it can be quite difficult to see.
"The back roads of Heathcote are badly lit."
UPDATE 2PM: Police have confirmed the UK national who died after being hit by a car in Heathcote overnight had only been in Australia for two weeks.
Leading Senior Constable Jason Peers of Heathcote Police said the 23-year-old was in Australia with his girlfriend.
Leading Senior Constable Peers confirmed the man had been lying on the street when hit by the car.
UPDATE 8.35AM: POLICE have said the man killed in Heathcote was a British national.
UPDATE 8.15AM: Heathcote man Shane Morris said the street the man was hit on last night was not well lit.
Mr Morris said that he was having dinner at a local pub last night and people were talking about the incident, although at that stage it was not clear what had happened.
He said Heathcote was a small town and people were feeling shocked about the incident.
UPDATE 8AM: Police said that the man who died after being hit by a car last night in Heathcote was a local.

THURSDAY: POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a pedestrian in Heathcote this evening.
Officers have been told that a Ford Falcon was travelling along Hospital Street near the intersection of Victoria Hill Road about 6.40pm.
The car hit a man who police say was on the road.
Emergency services were called to the incident but the pedestrian, believed to be a man in his 20s, died at the scene.
The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman from Thomastown, is assisting police with their inquires.
