The Bloods and Magpies were desperate to end their winless run.

The Bloods raced to a six-goal lead by half-time as they found a lot more avenues to goal. 

South's tally of nine goals in the opening hour included Ash Morris, Josh Whelan, two; Rory Alexander, Aaron Connaughton, Matthew Chisari, Ben Haines and Charles Trotman being on target.

The Magpies fought back brilliantly in the third.

Maryborough scored six goals in the third term as Matthew Bond, three; Ash Noonan, two; and Evan Hurse finished off the attacks.

Under fierce pressure, the Bloods were able to maintain their lead through goals by Whelan and Alexander.

South led 78-63 at a quarter to go.

A Matt Bond major in the first minute lifted the Borough's hopes.

It was lucky for some and unlucky for others when a shot at goal bounced off the boot of a Pies defender into the hands of Whelan to snap another goal.

The Pies kept the heat on with goals by Josh Collinson and Evan Hurse, but South replied through Chisari and Whelan.

It was Whelan's second five-goal haul in as many weeks as South won 14.19 (103) to 12.11 (83).

In just their second match as co-coaches, Peter Tyack and Neale Torpy were rapt with South's workrate and pressure.

Both believe belief and confidence across the whole team will rise markedly following this victory.

Tyack said South's effort to respond to Maryborough's third-quarter fightback was among the many positive signs.

"We knew going into the third quarter that Maryborough would be fired up and they were," said Tyack.

"The great thing is we kept on going, kept the pressure on, and put bodies on the line in a lot of contests.

"Today's effort was absolutely fantastic," said Tyack.

The Bloods' best were Jayke Barrack, Ben Jones, Ash Morris and Adrian Crawford.

Best for the Magpies were Matt Bond, Coby Perry and Evan Hurse.
