Premier Denis Napthine told state parliament on March 20, 2013, the government had rejected a recommendation country TAFEs merge.
Having local management and local input was “really important”, he said.
Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan called on Dr Napthine to “stick to his word and reject this takeover”.
“This is not two TAFEs coming together from a position of strength,” she said.
“This is coming from a position of desperation, being forced to look at options, forced to look at ways they can save even more money.”
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the TAFE sector was important given the high level of youth unemployment in Bendigo.
“There is no doubt this will impact on young people in our region,” she said.
Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum said the merger would be considered by ministers next week.
