Charity: budget not fair

THE Smith Family says the Federal Budget has failed disadvantaged school children.

The educational charity's general manager, Anton Leschen, said the budget didn't "pass the fairness test".

He said that removing the cap from student university fees and lowering the threshold for repaying the Higher Education Loan Program debts would discourage poor people from attending university.

"Disadvantaged students - unsurprisingly - are more sensitive to price, even if fees are deferred through the taxation system," he said.

"We need good roads but we also need a steady supply of skilled people from across our nation and will do for decades to come."
