The Bendigo Supabox team are in training to tackle Australia’s longest consecutive stair climb challenge, the Stadium Stomp at the MCG.
The unique challenge isn’t about who crosses the line first but a personal challenge of stamina and concentration for participants.
Stadium Stomp provides competitors the chance to climb an astonishing 7343 steps on the top and bottom seating levels at the MCG.
Participants can also raise money for a nominated charity.
Bendigo participant Emma Devlin said she was raising awareness and money for an organisation close to her heart, the Australian Bowel Cancer Foundation.
She said a friend of hers, who is only 34-years-old, had recently been diagnosed with the Bowel Cancer.
“It was a bit of a shock,” Devlin said.
“She is a healthy active person who was suddenly having chemotherapy.
“As a friend, I wanted to show my support so I wanted to raise awareness of the disease.”
Devlin said Bowel Cancer was a health issue that didn’t get enough attention within the community.
“It is the second most prominent cancer in the country and yet it is the least talked about,” she said.
Devlin called upon Bendigo to get behind her and her team and donate.
Teammate Lisa Nicolson said she achieved the Stadium Stomp last year with her husband in less than an hour.
“Last year we started a month out from the event, training three times a week at the tower at Rosalind Park,” she said.
“It was about getting the mileage in the legs before we did it.”
Nicolson said it was an amazing feeling having crossed the line on the hallowed turf of the MCG.
“We just kept up a steady pace,” she said.
“The most exciting bit was running through the banner on the MCG.”
This year about 10 people from Bendigo have set their sights on conquring the MCG.
Nicolson said she was looking forward to the challenge.
The Stadium Stomp MCG is on July 6.
