Helen Wood was Bendigo Health’s first ICU volunteer.
Ms Wood started lending a hand to the unit in November last year.
“I love to talk to patients and offer that support to their families in times of stress,” she said.
“The people I meet really like the fact I don’t talk to them about their treatment or condition.
"It is a nice change for them to chat about their job, families or extra curricula activities they’re involved with.”
Bendigo Health ICU nurse manager Sue Tomlinson said patients, families and staff all benefitted from volunteer involvement.
“Having the ICU volunteers has been greatly beneficial to our patients’ wellbeing and it has created a more vibrant atmosphere for our patients and their families," she said.
This week marks National Volunteer Week.
It's a chance to say a big thanks to the many volunteers who together form a formidable workforce powering many essential community, environmental, sporting, welfare, emergency services, education and cultural services and supports.
