MEMBERS of the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group are raising money for a community solar power initiative, The People's Solar.

A joint initiative between the MASG and social enterprise Energy for the People, the project will fund solar panels for various community organisations.

Spokeswoman Shona East said the group had come close to raising the amount of money needed to complete its first project - installing solar panels at the Castlemaine Childcare Centre.

MASG chairwoman Marg Rasa said the initiative would have economic and social benefits to the Mount Alexander Shire community.

"The People's Solar is an innovative way to help cash-strapped community organisations tackle rising energy bills," she said.

"It creates genuine social dividends for all involved."

Ms Rasa said Castlemaine Childcare Centre had been chosen on the basis of its contribution to the community and long history in the community.

The group is fundraising through word-of-mouth and through its website.
