Councillors endorse plan for future

CITY of Greater Bendigo councillors have encouraged residents to give feedback on the draft Council Plan 2013-2017.

Councillors unanimously voted to release the plan for comment at Wednesday's meeting.

The ambitious plan details future plans for the region across the next four years and includes several specific outcomes council will aim to meet.

Cr Rod Campbell said he supported the plan, which he said was full of "tremendous initiatives".

"I encourage all ratepayers to have a look at it and make their contribution to it," he said.

Cr Rod Fyffe said it was important the council and community worked together to "achieve an even better Bendigo".

'Are we becoming a Titanic?'

As a ferry with 476 passengers was badly listing off the southwestern coast of South Korea two weeks ago, one of the students on board asked, "Are we becoming a Titanic?"

"This is fun!" another shouted, apparently not realising that the ferry would soon capsize and sink.

In the background of videos recovered from the mobile phones of passengers aboard the ferry Sewol, a voice can be heard over the ship's intercom urging students and their teachers to stay put, telling them they are safer where they are. But as the ship continued to tip and the voice over the intercom repeated the same instructions, panic spread. Some passengers apparently sensed the approaching doom, and sent farewells to their families.
