Jury out on Long Gully splash park

Park design set to make a splash

IF THE opinions of Bendigo's junior citizens are anything to go by, the Long Gully splash park vote will come down to the wire.

When asked to pick their favourite designs on Saturday afternoon, children in Pall Mall were divided in favour of the scorpion and gold rush-themed parks.

These designs were overwhelmingly chosen over the spider-themed design due to a perception of superior play equipment and an abundance of free-flowing water.

Ella, 8, whose father didn't want her surname published, said she liked the gold rush design due to the many cooling hoses - or "spray things" - as she aptly described them.

Frazer Smith, 10, of Long Gully, said he preferred the gold rush-themed design because "it's got better equipment" but sister Polly, 8, liked the scorpion one because "it's got lots of water".

Father Mathew Smith sided with his daughter, saying children would most enjoy the mini-pool within the scorpion design in summer.

He praised the City of Greater Bendigo for creating the initiative.

"I think it's a great idea," he said.

"They're utilising the land.

"My kids love water so it will be fantastic for them."

Playground and splash park specialist Vortex has been awarded the tender to construct the solar-heated splash park, earmarked for the Long Gully Recreation Reserve.

People can vote for one of three proposed designs via the City of Greater Bendigo offices.
