BENDIGO Business Council president Patrick Falconer said the opening of a new 24-hour convenience store showed a shift in the type of work in Bendigo.
The store, 24 Seven Central, opened on the corner of Mitchell Street and Pall Mall in Bendigo's central business district on Saturday.
It is among several other 24-hour businesses operating in Bendigo, including gyms, fast-food outlets and service stations.
Mr Falconer said the rapid emergence of late night trading would hopefully force the Federal Government to review penalty rates.
"Our lives are changing because of the terms of work we do," he said.
"There are a lot more shift workers these days.
"(The change) is one of the reasons why the Federal Government needs to look at the penalty rate structure."
Mr Falconer welcomed the opening of the store and said he hoped it encouraged more shops to trade late.
"Hopefully more shops start to trade late," he said.
