The 15-year-old pushed a wheelbarrow along the main street of Maldon collecting donations during the grand procession.
"Maldon put on a bit of a show and they asked if I would help out," he said.
"I thought it would be a good chance to help, so I (agreed)."
Mr Herd said he was a member of the Maldon Fire Brigade running team and was happy to help out with the annual parade.
He said the donations went towards funding next year's Maldon Easter Fair.
"I don't mind doing my bit," he said.
"The funds are really important."
More than 1000 people turned out for the annual gala procession - a highlight of the Maldon Easter Fair.
Community organisations paraded down the streets of the town to cheers from the crowd.
Mr Herd said he had volunteered at the fair last year.
He said it was a good feeling to lend the community a helping hand and recommended others to try it.
