OUTSTANDING chaser Paw Licking scores its 32nd career win in Sunday night’s Skill Training Bendigo Cup at Lord’s Raceway.
The Kel Greenough-trained greyhound made the most of box one to hold the early lead from Bendigo dog Matt’s Entity.
Trained by Scott McKenzie, Matt’s Entity looked a threat to Paw Licking at the top of the home straight.
However, Paw Licking ($2.60) kicked strongly to hold out the fast finishing Deadly Vane ($8.70), with Matt’s Entity ($6.60) a gallant third.
Black Magic Opal ($2.70), which broke the track record in last Wednesday night’s heats, didn’t start as well as expected and found trouble down the back straight, ruining any chance the dog had of winning.
“It feels great to win it,’’ Greenough said after Paw Licking collected just shy of $50,000 for winning the Group Two event.
“He’s a wonderful dog. Box one is a massive advantage in these races.
“He has a great record off the red box (six wins from eight starts) and he needed that luck tonight with the draw.”
Deadly Vane made up a huge amount of ground to run second. The lightly-raced dogs proved it has a bright future at the top level.
Most of the Bendigo Cup field heads to Warrnambool on Wednesday for the running of the Warrnambool Cup heats.
Meanwhile, Arena Allen scored an upset win in Sunday night’s Barbeques Galore Gold Rush Final.
Starting from box five, Arena Allen showed tremendous early speed to cross to the front and never looked like being beaten.
Arena Allen ($10.20) won by six lengths from Almost Human ($27.40), with favourite Bejay The Dejay ($2.20) third.
