GOLDEN Square coach Nick Carter has been involved with many great wins at AFL, VFL and BFNL level.
The Good Friday win over Kangaroo Flat will go down as one of his favourites.
“It’s hard to explain how good it feels,’’ Carter said.
“When your captain goes down and the fact we’ve got so many new guys in, it was going to be tough.
“To see the young guys pick up on the Bulldogs spirit was fantastic. There’s so much upside for the club.
“I really admire the boys for what they did tonight.”
Even the most loyal Golden Square fans would have thought their side was in severe trouble when Kangaroo Flat opened a 27-point lead late in the third term.
The Roos had all the momentum, a big crowd behind them and a key target in the goalsquare by the name of Brendan Fevola.
On the flipside, the Bulldogs were down a rotation and had no talls inside forward 50 to kick to.
However, there was one major difference in the final quarter.
Golden Square knew how to win and the Roos went into their shell.
With the game on the line in the final minute the Bulldogs forced the ball from defensive 50 to half-forward where 16-year-old Sam Harper ran on to a chain of handballs and kicked truly.
“We didn’t play pretty footy, but we got the job done,’’ Carter said.
“It was just desperate footy and we got the result.
“Kangaroo Flat is a really competitive side and they threw everything at us.
“It just shows that the BFNL is going to be a very competitive league this year.”
Defenders Jon Coe and Clayton Anderson were clearly Golden Square’s best two players.
Forward Hamish Morcom bagged three goals, while Dale Lowry did a lot of grunt work in the middle.
Big man Nick Lang worked tirelessly for the Roos, while midfielder Corey Greer was electric at times with three goals.
The Roos’ three tall forwards - Fevola (4.2), Cam Rinaldi (two goals) and Braydan Knox (one goal) – took 15 marks between them but that still wasn’t enough for the home side to kick a winning score.
