The Epsom resident joined the SES almost two years ago.
"It’s been great, I’ve been loving every moment of it," Mr Whittaker said.
"I like the social side of it and I've found out a lot about myself since I've joined the SES," he said
Mr Whittaker said his experience with the SES had inspired him to work towards getting a paid job with the service.
"That's something to look forward to," he said.
"I'd like to become a regional trainer and teach general rescue courses."
The 21-year-old has done about 10 courses since he joined the SES.
"They’ve included the fundamentals which is an overview of everything we do," he said
"I’ve also done first-aid and occupational health and safety, as well as maps and navigation for land searches.
"And an Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System course.
"We use that if there is a big job and we need multiple agencies to assist the community."
Mr Whittaker is volunteering this weekend at the Marong Driver Reviver site.
