PLANS to build a cultural centre in Bendigo have been backed by City of Greater Bendigo councillors, who say the centre will "build a centre of significance for the Aboriginal community".
The proposal for a 326-square-metre cultural centre at Prouses Road features a place of assembly, cafeteria and health services.
Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative will consolidate existing services into one location, while also expanding facilities.
"(This will enable) greater interaction with people outside the Aboriginal community through an onsite childcare centre and community and cultural centre," it says.
"These facilities will be made available to the wider Bendigo community, not just the aboriginal community."
The proposal has received two objections, with key considerations including bushfire risk, amenity impacts and traffic concerns.
Councillors unanimously supported the application.
"This is a major development in terms of funds and design," Cr Cox said.

In other council news, the draft Hospital Precinct Structure Plan was released for public comment.
Councillor James Williams said the draft was "the blueprint for the future" and urged residents to have their say.
The draft focuses on land use, public spaces, mobility and infrastructure at the 165-hectare precinct surrounding the new Bendigo Hospital.
