In their first game of the season, the Navy Blues held Boort goalless in the first half during their comfortable 14.14 (98) to 7.4 (46) win.
Charlton - last year's runners-up - was already 50 points up at half-time as it led 7.10 to 0.2.
Both teams kicked seven goals apiece after half-time, but when the game was there to be won early, it was the Navy Blues who were in complete control.
Along with Finlay, the Navy Blues also had dominant players in Rhys Thompson, Joseph McLean, Angus McKenzie (two goals), Daniel Thiesz and coach Aaron Walklate.
After strong recruiting over the pre-season, Boort has started the year 0-2, with its two losses against last year's grand finalists, Wedderburn and Charlton.
Aaron Wilson, Keiren Wilson, Corey Wilkinson, Michael Henningsen and Jack Dehne played well for the Magpies.
• St Arnaud kicked away from Birchip-Watchem in the final term to win by 46 points in a game where the margin blew out.
The Bulls had led by four points at three quarter-time, but the strong-finishing Saints banged home nine goals to one in the final term to win 20.8 (128) to 12.10 (82).
The Saints quickly broke the game open in the final quarter, slamming on five unanswered goals in the first nine minutes.
Saints' forward Daniel Needs backed his six goals up last week with seven, while coach James McNamee added four.
Needs and McNamee combined for seven of the Saints' nine last-quarter goals.
Also playing well for the Saints were Benjamin Batters, Andrew Jesse and Jobastin Priest, who has started the season in fine form.
Recruit Daniel Castellano kicked four goals to be among the best for the Bulls, along with another new player in Daniel Ratcliffe, coach Tom Carland and Jacob Noonan.
• Reigning premier Wedderburn dominated after half-time to defeat Wycheproof-Narraport by 47 points.
Scores had been locked together at 6.5 apiece at half-time.
However, the class of the Redbacks took over after the long break as they added 11 goals to four to win 17.15 (117) to 10.10 (70).
Gun signing Mark Lloyd was named the best for the Redbacks, while another of their Bendigo Football League recruits in Tom McCarthy was also damaging.
Brady Herdman bagged five goals for Wedderburn, which doesn't play again for 21 days.
Co-coach Ricky Allan kicked five of Wycheproof-Narraport's 10 goals.
Samuel Driscoll, Benjamin Brennan, James Coatsworth and Declan Lourey were named the best for the Demons.
