MORE than 200 people attended the launch of De Anima, a new installation at the Bendigo Art Gallery, on Saturday.
The work, by Brook Andrew, is an eerie and unique combination of audio and video combined with theatrical performance and sculpture.
It is on show in conjunction with The Cinemas Project, which explores cinema spaces in regional Victoria and allows artists to look at the mechanics of film alongside the present day reality of cinema.
Professor Marcia Langton opened the exhibition saying the Cinemas Project enabled Andrew to use film in a much more significant way than in the past.
"It is a hyper-representation of the all-seeing eye on marginalised people," she said.
"It's recalibrated by his collaboration with fellow artists to enable subjects to speak back and has taken all authority from the Colonial eye.
"It is internationally significant. An extraordinary collaboration that overwhelms the senses."
After the official opening, singer Mama Alto (who is also featured in the exhibition) sang alongside performers who literally brought Andrew's installation to life.
De Anima runs until June 1 at the Bendigo Art Gallery.
