The Australian Bureau of Statistics has confirmed the City of Greater Bendigo’s population grew by 1.7 per cent, or 1727 people, in 2012 to 2013.
The Regional Population Growth Figures estimate Greater Bendigo’s population was 105,332 as of June 30 last year.
City of Greater Bendigo strategy manager Trevor Budge said the growth was in line with the City’s population forecasts.
He said an additional 1000 houses per year will be needed to meet anticipated demand.
He said this would occur through new developments like the recently approved Forest Park Estate at Maiden Gully and infill development.
“It will be interesting to chart these figures over the coming years as the Bendigo Hospital redevelopment is completed and the region continues to attract more people moving from Melbourne and overseas," he said.
The City has released its draft Residential Development Strategy for public comment until May 30.
Mr Budge said the council was urging residents to comment on the strategy and provide ideas about how Bendigo should develop.
“The figures reinforce the City’s message that now is the time to plan for future growth and it will be important to provide each resident with the type of housing and lifestyle options they are wanting," he said.
