THERE’S no way to describe West Bendigo’s season other than “the one that got away” as the Redbacks’ flag drought continues.
Looked set to finish on top of the ladder when in their final game of the home and away season the Redbacks were 3-210 chasing Golden Gully’s 249.
However, the Redbacks - who had sat on top of the ladder between rounds eight and 11 - capitulated to be bowled out for 234 by the Cobras and as a result, tumbled from top to fourth.
The following week in what became a rain-affected semi-final, they spent 102 overs in the field without getting a bat as United made 437 en route to winning the premiership.
Veteran Ken Bell was a joint winner of the EVCA’s Cricketer of the Year, polling 13 votes for a season in which he made 511 runs.
