She volunteers once a fortnight and hopes to one day do it more frequently.
She is a full time clerical worker and appreciates that this allows her to get out of the office to do something different.
"A lot of the things I learn can be used in a normal work environment," she said.
"Workplaces are making it easier on volunteers.
"The volunteer environment gives skills to use in workplaces."
Cathie began volunteering because family members had done it in the past. She said helping others taught her new skills and a chance to meet new people.
"It was something that suited my needs, to learn and to give back to the community," she said.
"I learn new skills and meet new people."
For anyone considering doing volunteer work Cathie encourages them to take a look at their hobbies.
"Consider not only yourself but the wider community," she said.
"Think about what you will get out of it too.
"You've got to get into something that interests you."
