MACEDON Ranges Shire is assisting Work Safe and police with the investigation into the death of a man at Newham.
The contractor was working at a council roadwork site on Wednesday when he was struck by a truck about 7am.
Macedon Ranges Shire chief executive officer Dale Thornton said council was shocked and saddened by the tragedy.
"We are assisting the police and Work Safe with their investigations, and have also launched our own investigation into the incident," he said.
"Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones."

POLICE are still on the scene of a fatality at Newham.
It is believed five workmen were setting up a work site about 7am when one of the men was hit by a truck.
He died at the scene.
The man is yet to be formally identified.
A 48-year-old man has been arrested and is currently assisting police.
Witnesses to the crash should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THE fatality is one of two in central Victoria on Wednesday after a motorcyclist was killed near Maryborough.
UPDATE 7.49PM:
THREE Chain Road near Newham is blocked in both directions after a man, in his 40s, was killed by a truck this morning.
Police from Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend have attended.
EARLIER:
A MAN has died after being struck by a truck in Newham early Wednesday morning.
The man, aged in his 40s, was walking near Three Chain Road and Dons Road about 7.10am when he was struck.
Police and paramedics are still on scene.
