Snyder targets high leaps at major meets

SWAN Hill's Denise Snyder will be leaping against many of the country's best high jumpers across the next two weekends.

The Bendigo-based athlete, who competes with Eaglehawk YMCA, has earned an invitation to this weekend's Queensland Track Classic.

The following weekend and it's off to Melbourne for the national track and field championships at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park.

Snyder will be aiming to surpass her personal best of 1.82 metres and has put in many hours training at the La Trobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill.

"It's the first time I will have competed at the Queensland Classic," Snyder said before Tuesday's workout.

"To have reached 1.82 at last year's nationals in Sydney was an awesome feeling."

Her best this season was 1.79 at the Victorian Open at Lakeside.

"A goal is to reach my PB and possibly a Commonwealth Games B qualifier of 1.83." The A qualifier for Glasgow is 1.91.

Snyder first competed in Little Athletics at Swan Hill in the under-6 class.

Completing a masters degree in occupational therapy  at La Trobe University Bendigo, Snyder is being assisted in her long jump training by long-time athletics coach Peter Barrett.
