The Bendigo resident was looking for something to keep him occupied during his retirement.
His role includes ensuring the exhibits are in order, maintaining visitor records and looking after the gallery.
Mr Phillips said he had learnt a lot in his short time at the gallery.
He said he found his position enjoyable and rewarding.
"I learn a bit from the exhibits and I have learnt a lot about the history of Bendigo during the gold rush," he said.
"I have met a lot of people who travel to Bendigo.
"They come from Melbourne, interstate and overseas.
"A great extent of the people visit the Bendigo Art Gallery and then drop by the Post Office Gallery."
The Post Office Gallery is located at 51-67 Pall Mall, Bendigo.
It is open from 9am to 5pm daily.
Mr Phillips said he would urge anyone with time on their hands to volunteer.
He said it was worth the time and effort.
He said you never know, you might learn something.
