The 25-year-old fell in love with the city and has never looked back.
Originally from Sydney, Mr Rutherfurd is a volunteer at the Bendigo Tramways.
He has been volunteering at the historical site for the past eight years.
"When I travelled to Bendigo I really liked the tramways and decided it was a great place to hang around," Mr Rutherfurd said.
"I really liked the unique nature of of the tramways.
"There is not many people my age who can say they drive a 100-year-old tram."
As part of his role at the tramways Mr Rutherfurd drives the trams and also helps out whenever anyone needs anything.
"I am a bit of an all-rounder," he said.
"I volunteer about two to three days every fortnight."
Mr Rutherfurd said it was important for people in the community to become volunteers.
"It is a wonderful feeling when you volunteer," he said.
Mr Rutherfurd also said he is a volunteer with the Country Fire Authority.
He said he was always ready to go when he got the call.
