Sergeant Tony Commadeur from Bendigo Police said a group of men had been in the backyard and had decided to burn some rubbish.
"It got out of control and the CFA were required to put the fire out," he said.
"It could well have led to destruction of housing and other property.
"It's still fire restriction time.
"It's still very, very dry.
"It's still extraordinarily dangerous to light a fire."
Sergeant Commadeur said police were investigating the incident.
"They did have a hose nearby but it couldn't contain the fire when it got away from them," he said.
"I'm not too sure how many people were there but it looks like people in their 30s.
"It comes as a reminder to people about fire restrictions."
