Detective Sergeant Nigel Freebairn said police had interviewed a 35-year-old man from Coldstream and expected him to be charged on summons with indecent assault and unlawful assault.
He said the suspect boarded the 3.16pm V/Line service from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne on Sunday March 9.
The man was ejected from the train at Sunbury station after the alleged assault of a central Victorian woman aged in her 40s, Mr Fairbairn said.
The man later boarded a 4.51 train from Sunbury station.
Police want to hear from passengers on the 3.16pm train before the man was ejected, who may have information about the alleged incident or the man’s behaviour.
The suspect is described as 170cm tall, unshaven with olive skin, and brown straight hair.
He was wearing a distinctive white dress hat, a black T-shirt underneath a white shirt, black jeans and was carrying a backpack.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sergeant Freebairn at Kyneton Police on 5421 2900 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
